Where I Found Myself
I was very apprehensive going into college. I went to make my parents proud, however I didn't know what I was getting myself into. I didn't know what I wanted to study, I wasn't confident in my academics, and was extremely scared to fail. Walking into huge lecture halls with approximately 300 students was more than overwhelming for me. These professors seemed really strict and knowledgeable, which intimidated me. I didn't want to embarrass myself and hand in a paper or an assignment that was poor, therefore I spent an abundance of time on my studies. There was one class that made all the difference and changed my life, English 1050, the freshman English course. We were assigned to write a memoir, I was very nervous about this because I didn't have my mom to write my papers anymore. This was all on me. I spent hours on end writing this paper because I didn't want to turn in a paper that wasn't well written. My teacher was very patient with me and gave me writing advice throughout this journey. I met with her at a coffee shop and asked questions on end to ensure that I was on the right track. After getting back my grade for this assignment I was so proud of myself. I received my first A on a paper. This gave me the motivation and confidence to be a good student. I never thought I had that capability.
The Paper that Changed My Life:
From writing this paper I discovered that I liked writing. It came naturally to me and I felt as though I could express myself in a nonjudgemental manner. I took this motivation and applied it to my other classes. I ended my freshman year with a 3.2 GPA. I came so far in one whole year. From then on I kept enrolling in writing classes, which led me to becoming a future English teacher. I am incredibly proud of myself for leaving my old lifestyle and poor attitude behind me and taking on new challenges. I have never been so committed to my future and excited for the career ahead of me.
