Middle school was difficult for me. I had a hard time adjusting to living in the United States again. It was quite the culture shock. In 6th grade I was enrolled in a small Catholic school called Marist Academy where I spent the next 3 years. Due to the fact that my mom hated public schools, I was forbidden to go to a public middle school. As I said before, she blamed my academic difficulties on the first grade public school class I was in. Changing schools was a disadvantage for me because each school worked at different paces with different styles.
As you know, middle school is usually the most awkward years in an individual's life... and I was no exception. I had a hard time fitting in at Marist Academy as a way of rebelling I took it out on my academics. I was behind in my studies because I refused to do my homework and assigned readings.
The only memory of middle school I have is that my mom would do my homework every night. She was trying to be the best parent she could and would read me assigned readings because I refused to. I was really behind in my reading and comprehension and was discouraged to improve them because I was very embarrassed. I wanted to focus on what I was good at and was discouraged to work on my weaknesses.
